For approximately 3 months (longer if necessary), residents will live in a safe, supervised living arrangement and receive assistance with basic needs for nourishment, shelter, clothing and health care. Residents will be assigned a program counsellor who through individual counselling will assess their social and behavioural needs and assist them with goal setting and accessing community resources (such as substance abuse counselling and treatment and mental health services). Reunification with family will be explored and family counselling provided, however, if reunification is not appropriate, residents will be mentored in the areas of basic living skills, such as personal hygiene, laundry, shopping, cooking, budgeting, conflict resolution, and study and/or job search skills in preparation for independent living. Residents will be required to attend school and/or employment activities.
